This seminar will examine all aspects of therapeutic communication within the context of the nurse-patient relationship. Traditional therapeutic and non-therapeutic techniques will be discussed in detail. Additional techniques, such as assertive communication, limit-setting, and conflict resolution will be presented. Emphasis will be given to nurse behaviors that promote therapeutic communication, as well as potential barriers to effective communication. Many examples of therapeutic communication will be presented throughout.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the seminar, the student will be able to:

  1. Distinguish therapeutic communication from social interaction.
  2. Identify goals of communication with patients.
  3. Distinguish nurse behaviors that promote therapeutic communication from those that hinder effective interaction.
  4. Select effective communication techniques for a variety of situations.
  5. Identify situations when limit-setting, assertiveness, and conflict resolution are therapeutic.
  6. Identify the influence of culture, spirituality, and boundaries on therapeutic communication.

  2. Therapeutic communication – purposes, goals, verbal and nonverbal skills/behaviors
  3. Traditional therapeutic communication techniques – contrasted with non-therapeutic responses/questions
  4. Communicating with patients with a variety of diagnoses/behaviors
  5. Communicating in situations that involve inappropriate behavior, hostility, conflict
  6. Influence of culture, spirituality, boundaries on communication
  7. Communication questions
  8. Current developments in psychiatric nursing practice in the United States
